Wednesday September 12 It is a beautiful
80 degree sunny day in Omaha.
The day began with the Men's General Business Meeting.
The following is a summary of the meeting:
The board, in open
session, rejected a proposal to revise the by-laws to allow a mail-in ballot for electing
directors. This action followed a non-binding vote of all members present. The vote
was 94 against and 40 for the proposal.
President Tom Kidd
announced that 272 members, representing 127 ships, registered for the convention.
367 people are expected to attend Thursday evening's banquet. Also, that DESA
gained 278 new members since January 1. Of these, 51 joined via the internet
website, 113 were recruited by other members and 85 joined through the efforts of Dean
Hoover.
Three new directors were
elected:
- Dean Hoover, USS Van Voorhis DE-1028 & USS Hartley DE-1029
- Dick Ager, USS Gantner DE-60/APD 42
- Rex Thorne, USS Heyliger DE-510
At the conclusion of the
meeting, Kidd presented plaques to:
- Retiring directors John Mitchell, Charles Leonard and Joseph Carinci.
- Hoover, for his outstanding recruiting efforts within the 1000-Class DEs.
- Kevin Ferrell, who created DESA's first official web site and served as the webmaster
for 2 years.
The Ladies' General Business Meeting was held this morning, also.
Two seminars took place in the afternoon -
"The Homefront Plus Exciting Traditions & Tales of the Navy was presented by
Martin Davis
"Anchors Aweigh - Surfing The Internet" was presented by Pat Stephens, DESA
webmaster.
The Ship's Stores remained busy places.
Tours of the SAC Museum, Safari Park and Freedom Park were well attended today! |
