At the conference table aboard the USS Levy DE 162, August 19, 1945, three days before the Japanese surrender of Mille Atoll. The Japanese had to inquire of Tokyo for advice on the surrender terms. This meeting ended with the Japanese stating they would make a white cross of sheets when they were ready to surrender and return to the Levy to sign formal papers. At center left, with moustache, is Shiga's aide; looking over his own left shoulder is Japanese Navy Captain Masanori Shiga. At right, with back to sea, is a U.S. interpreter.
