| Recently, your webmaster purchased a book, "Ship's Data U. S. Naval Vessels", Vol. 1 published by the Bureau of Ships, Navy Department, April 15, 1945. The publication was
NAVSHIPS 250-010 and was RESTRICTED. There were 3 volumes published (250-010, 011 and 012), but only volume one contains information about Destroyer Escorts.
A Letter of Promulgation dated April 15th is the first page in the book and was written by E. L. Cochrane, Vice Admiral U.S.N., Chief of Bureau. In part, the letter reads:
NAVSHIPS 250-010 <011 and 012> ....... supersede the 1943 edition of "Ships' Data, U.S. Naval Vessels" together with the 1944 addenda thereto, which publications should be
destroyed.
This document contains information affecting the National Defense of the United States within the meaning of the Espionage Act, 50 U.S.C., 31 and 32, as amended. Its
transmission or the revelation of its contents in any manner to an unauthorized person is prohibited by law.
It is forbidden to make extracts from or to copy these publications without specific authority from the Chief of Naval Operations, except as provided for in paragraph 517
of the registered publication manual.
So, as you can see, the US Navy considered this book to be the authoritative document about Navy vessels. Therefore, I accept this information to be true and accurate above
other sources.
After I have transcribed the information, I plan to donate the book to the National Archives, where I believe it belongs to be used by other Navy ship researchers.
Below is information from this book.
