Horace Leslie Thomas,
C.E.M. [Chief Electrician's Mate], USCGR For heroic conduct while rescuing an exhausted officer from drowning on April 7, 1944. When a motor whale boat attached to the USS HOWARD D. CROW capsized during hoisting operations, throwing her crew into the sea, Thomas promptly lowered himself into the treacherous waters and secured in line to the drowning man. Thomas enabled the crew to haul his helpless shipmate aboard, although he himself drowned while attempting to return to the vessel. Also, his name can be found on the WWII Memorial in Battery Park, NYC. Submitted 2005 by his son, Leslie Thomas Marnell, San Luis Obispo, CA From USCG Book of Valor
