Mrs. Daniel A. Joy at Commissioning Ceremony

USS DANIEL A. JOY DE 585

"My Mother's first cousin Virginia Firneisen Joy Hendricks was the wife of Daniel A. Joy. She christened the Joy when it was commissioned as you may know. My mother attended the ceremony. I have in my
possession inherited photos of the christening as well as an invitation and a couple of the programs you have on your web sight.  Virginia and I have been exchanging Christmas Cards for years.  Unfortunately I did not receive one this year. I do not know if she has passed or is in a nursing home. Interestingly, Virginia's father
was on the ill fated "General Slocum" the ferry boat which burned in the East River near "Brother's Island" in New York City. Virginia's father "Henry Firneisen" was my great-uncle. The family all survived"

Webmaster Note:  The officers in the photo are unknown and are not the officers of DE 585.  The following email was received in June 2006 from Hollis "Hal" Weir, EM 2/c, Plankowner, aboard 28 April 1944 until decommissioning, 31 May 1946:

"As shown on the commissioning invitation, we had 11 officers aboard, including the captain, LT. Fred Lawton. We never had a full Commander attached to our ship and there are three of them shown in the photo. Actually we only had three full Lieutenants, the rest being JG's and Ensigns. I don't know who the officers in the photo are. They might be Navy reps at the ceremony, but are definitely not JOY officers."
