USS DOBLER DE 48

1945, Location Unknown

"I served aboard DE-5 and DE-48 during WW-II from Sept 43 to the spring of 1945. Made 8 round trips across the Atlantic convoying into the Med. My rating was RM2/c with a primary assignment as HF/DF monitor for German Subs and operated a HF/DF net with 2 other escorts. When a sighting report was received by us from a sub we took bearings and escorts went after the sub. Usually the sighting reports as sent by the subs lasted less than a minute so we did not have much time to get a bearing. Pretty boring until planes started shooting back in the Med one time. I was on the DE-48 on 11 May 1944 when we were attacked. I left the Dobler in the summer of 1945 before VJ Day to go to radio material school."
