German Submarine U-873 Crewmembers U-873 surrendered and was captured by USS Vance DE 387, 11 May 1945. I do not know the date or location of this photo. Perhaps it was part of the records found aboard Photo courtesy of Joe Haberkern, son of Joseph W. Haberkern, Jr., MoMM2/C, Plankowner 28 February 2006 Update: I was contacted by Peter Binnefeld, Jr., son of U-873 crewmember Peter Binnefeld who is pictured in this photo. Peter informed me that this photo was taken at the Commissioning of U-873 on 1 March 1944 and he has an original copy of this photo on the back of which his father wrote the date and commissioning information. Also, Peter said in his email: "My father died 1963. I was 11 years old at this time. He left me a small collection of photos, for which I did not have the historical background for a long time. This changed some years ago, when I found during an internet search, the website of Jerry Mason [www.uboatarchives.net]. We exchanged informations and photos. I found in this way contact to an old friend of my father, the radio-man of U-604 and U-873, who still lives in a town near my hometown. The last time I had been with him was when I was a little child. So I got unexpected first hand information and a lot of details for my increasing archive about U-604 and U-873. Since this time we have met each other from time to time. During a visit to Germany by Jerry Mason we had a memorable meeting, especially for the interests of Jerry." Kind Regards,
Peter Peter has donated other U-boat photos and information about U-873 and U-604 to the Uboat Archive website.
Thank you, Peter. |
