USS VANCE DE 387 DE 387 served as the flagship for Escort Division (CortDiv) 45 - a Coast Guard-manned unit. On 11 May 1945, Vance accepted the capitulation of U-873, the first German submarine to surrender. Vance placed a 21 man prize crew on board who delivered the U-boat to Portsmouth, NH., 16 May. Joseph W. Haberkern, Jr., MoMM 2/c, served in Vance November 1943 to October 1945. The following photos are from his personal album. Unfortunately, Mr. Haberkern did not label all these photos, but the history of DE 387 helps explain some of the photos. Haberkern also maintained a diary while he was aboard ship. The entries provide an excellent record of the ship's service. Also, his photos and diary entries of the surrender of U-873 preserve this historical event. The photos and diary information were provided by his son, Joe Haberkern.
