ALTAIR F 591
(Italian Frigate)
ex-USS GANDY DE 764
"Photo was taken in the Taranto Bay when we first arrived from the US after taking
possession of the ship. Note there is not yet a hull number on the ship.
I came out of the Italian Navy Academy as Aspirante (Cadet) and I was assigned aboard
ALTAIR as responsible for the ammunitions and deposit of these ones.
A few months later I was promoted to Guardiamarina (Ensign) and I became
galloper to the Firing Officer (Commander of the weapons and the guns).
With the rank of Guardiamarina, I was disembarked from the Altair at the end of 1952.
I was reshipped on other units of the Italian Navy and I left the Navy
in 1958 acquiring the grade of Tenente di Vascello (Lieutenant)".
