USS O'Toole DE 527

USS O'TOOLE DE 527

"This photo was taken sometime after her initial shakedown cruise, prior to receiving war paint.  It's hard to distinguish, but on the stack is painted a green shamrock with a white clay pipe (typical Irish symbols).

I graduated from radio school April 1944 and was assigned to USS JOHN J. POWERS DE 528 30 May 1944 for convoy duty in the Atlantic until 19 Sept 1944.  I was then transferred to USS O'TOOLE DE 527 and promoted to RM 2/c as Flag Radioman for CORTDIV 80.

My first convoy was Convoy 119 out of NY to Plymouth, England and we rode out the great Atlantic hurricane of Sept 1944.  I stayed aboard until decommissioning in Charleston, SC, 18 Oct 1945."
