Destroyer Escorts Built For the United Kingdom

Compiled by Anne McCarthy and Pat Perrella

The following WW II DEs were built for the United Kingdom Royal Navy under a Lend-Lease agreement with the U.S. They were known as Royal Navy (RN) Captain Class Frigates with HMS (His/Her Magesty's Ship) designation.

The Captain Class Frigates were of the Evarts and Buckley class. However, the armament of these DEs differed from US Navy DEs.

Please note that the US Navy named some of the original DEs, then the names were reassigned to other DEs after the ship was transferred to the Royal Navy.

78 DEs Were Built For The UK for WW II Service

His or Her Majesty's Ship (HMS) is the title of any commissioned ship in the British Royal Navy, and refers to the King or Queen of the United Kingdom as appropriate at the time.

Much gratitude is owed to Anne McCarthy and Pat Perrella, USS Slater volunteer, for their research and devotion to keeping alive the memories of the Destroyer Escort.
